Are You a Slave?

Recently, a breaking news story from Lynchburg, VA introduced the latest scandal of happenings in the Christian community. Of course the "news hounds" couldn't wait to sniff out all the loathsome details to expose to the world. It is disgusting what we Christians sometimes allow ourselves to be a part of. One thing is certain, however. Satan is expert at taking something God called good and turning it into a rotten thing, unworthy of even the mention of its facts.

When many Christians became aware of the facts of this scandalous and sordid affair, they became physically ill. Not because they thought they were somehow "better" than the actors in this unfortunately play of life, but because deep in our hearts, we know that we are, or at one time were, capable of the same type of actions that has now brought a family low, who was once very much respected in Christian circles.

These people, like all of us at one time or another, have become "slaves" to sin. After hearing about the affair and thinking about it for several hours, I feel that, like Eve in the Garden, the idea for this sinful string of actions didn't just suddenly happen. These people were tempted over a period of time until they finally gave in and began to practice their lusts instead of merely being tempted.

Christian brothers and sisters, we must not fall into a similar trap! Though we may never be engaged in anything of that sort, we should pray to our loving Father daily to "lead us not into temptation, but to deliver us from evil, (Matthew 6:13).

Here in Kentucky, as in many parts of the world, we have learned since childhood to recognize the smell of a skunk. When we smell one in our vicinity, we have enough common sense to run in the other direction. If we fail to do so, we will end up with everyone we know identifying us as the one who got too close to the skunk! They will smell its musk all over us!

When we first sense the temptation of sin, we should turn and run as fast as we can from it. Sin is Satan's "apple" for you. He can polish the apple until the shine from it is almost indistinguishable from one of the stars of heaven.

Don't be a slave to sin! Run from it! 13 "No temptation[a] has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it," (1 Cor. 10:13).

Could these Christians have avoided ruining their lives? Yes! Would it have been easy to avoid? Maybe not as easy as you think, because many times sin is easier than service.

One thing is certain. Their lives are now tainted with something that no matter how many good deeds they do, their witness for Jesus will suffer. Can they recover and serve God again? Yes! If they will repent of these sins and be honest with their witness, they may influence tens of thousands of others who are engaged in the same type of sins to also repent and denounce their sinful actions. Life isn't over when you sin against our loving Lord. He is willing to give you a second and third chance. Like the song says, "Turn your eyes upon Jesus, Look full on His wonderful face, and the things of earth will grow strangely dim, in the light of His glory and grace."

Christian, we weren't sent here to sin! We were sent to serve and honor our Heavenly Father! Join me in asking Him today to show us how to avoid besmirching His name while we seek direction in serving and honoring our Savior Jesus Christ!

May God bless you today as you serve His great cause!
