The Biblical Condemnation of Abortion

Hello, everyone. With Chris out of town, he left me to create the blog post. So, as I sat down to create this blog post, I begun to think about an article Chris and I read yesterday, about why Roe v. Wade should be overturned. I began to investigate what the bible said about abortion. As Christians, we are always told abortion is wrong, and that abortion is murder, but nobody ever tells us why or gives us any justification to their thoughts. As a result, I begun to read into the subject last night, following work.

While the Bible never explicitly speaks out about abortion, the Bible does speak of how God “knows us before he forms us in the womb,” (Jeremiah 1:5) and speaks of how “God is active in our creation and formation in the womb.” (Psalm 139: 13-16) God prescribes an equal penalty for someone who causes the death of a baby as for a person who commits murder – death. (Exodus 21: 22-25) Abortion isn’t a matter of choice for a Christian woman, it’s a matter of life and death for a human being made in God’s image. (Genesis 1:26-27; 9:6)

Now, I could wrap up the blog now, call it quits and leave it there. However, worldly opposition exists when Christians come to arise on their stance of abortion. One argument, and the most frequent one used against Christians, is “what if the baby is the child of incest or rape?” This instance in and of itself makes up for only 1.5 percent of abortion cases. It must be horrible to be impregnated by an instance like this, but is the murder of a baby in God’s eyes truly worth the repercussions that would be able to be dealt out by our Father? The last I checked, two wrongs don’t make a right. If I witness a man steal a cookie jar, then walk up and punch his kid directly in the face, it isn’t justified. Just because I bore witness to a crime, doesn’t mean another crime should be justified. Think of the situation flipped around as well, if a woman was impregnated due to cheating, what if the woman’s husband could choose for the baby to be killed because the wife was an adulterer? Two sins don’t wash one’s sins clean, and two crimes don’t render one innocent, just guiltier.

The other common argument is “what if the mother’s health is at risk?” This question can be difficult to answer but can be answered nevertheless. First, this sort of situation accounts for less than one tenth of abortions. Abortions are commonly done for convenience, not for health concerns. Now, as humans, we tend to try to put God into a box and put constraints on what he can and can’t do. We worship a God who has, and can, preform miracles and preserve life despite all medical odds being against his children in Christ. We put more value on the lives that are currently living, rather than those to come, and that is where this problem of abortion takes root.

There is hope, however. Abortion isn’t any more of a sin than adultery, murder, anger, bitterness, complaining, deceit, or any other sin condemned by our Lord and Savior. All sins can be forgiven, just by asking for forgiveness from Christ. A woman who has gotten an abortion, a man who encouraged an abortion, even a doctor who preformed one, all can be forgiven and cleansed by having faith in Jesus Christ.
