A Sneak Peek

This Sunday is our annual homecoming. It is mostly a time to visit, acquaint, eat a great meal, enjoy the company of those you may not have seen for a while, and take an airplane ride! NO Just kidding about the plane ride. But we will gather together to hear the preaching of the word of God, hear some gospel music.

I'm going to give you a sneak peek at our message for Sunday. The message will be about Jesus presentation of the gospel, but there is an aside there which never is discussed very much among modern-day Christians. It is the topic of the Year of Jubilee. In the ancient Jewish culture, (during the time of Jesus on the earth, and before), there was a year periodically, (every 50 years to be exact), when debt was forgiven and everyone could begin again with a clean slate.

Until the year of Jubilee, those who had fallen into debt were not utterly cast away but were treated as employees to the creditor. Or, in other words, when they could not pay their debt to a creditor, they were indentured to the creditor until their debt was paid.

If the debt hadn't been reduced to zero by the time the Year of Jubilee arrived, the debt was forgiven so the debtor could be restored and begin anew. By the calendar, 2013 was a Year of Jubilee. Wouldn't it be wonderful is in our country, there was a Year of Jubilee? All debt would be forgiven and instantly everyone would be debt free? Imagine how that would kick start the economy!

Well, there you have it! That isn't the topic of Sunday's message but it's something to think about between now and then.
