Enough's Enough

September 13, 2018

I think if I had one wish to use, I would wish everyone in the world had enough. It's a wish I believe would take care of a lot of specific wishes, and I don't think it would be terribly easy to abuse after I made it. If we all had enough, we'd have money to pay our bills. Enough food on the table. Enough clothes in the closet. Enough gas in the tank. Enough work to do. Enough vacation days. Enough sleep at night. Enough time with our loved ones. Enough health, enough happiness, enough sadness, enough patience . . .

You get the idea. We live in a world of lack, of need, and of want. We never have enough of everything we need or want, be it physical, mental, emotional, or spiritual. There's not enough time, not enough money, not enough joy. Never enough. Except for one thing, and it's something we don't often think about.

Acts 4:12 says of Jesus, "Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved." In other words, Jesus is enough. His name, his power, his sacrifice, his word, his love, his grace, his mercy . . . they're all enough. Enough for our salvation. Enough for our redemption. Enough for our forgiveness. Enough for our paradise.

Often we treat God as a cosmic genie, expecting Him to grant all our wishes if only we rub the lamp the right way, so to speak. When we do this, we fail not only to recognize the nature and character of God, but also His sufficiency. "My grace is sufficient for you," God says (2 Corinthians 12:9). God is enough. Enough for you, enough for me, enough for everyone.
