Nothing New

June 7, 2017

You may have noticed some of my blogs have posted later than usual in the last week or two. I'd love to say it's because I've been busy doing other things which had priority, but that's just not true. Things have been late because I've sat down at the keyboard, stared at the blank page, and came up with absolutely nothing. I had nothing new, nothing novel to say that day in that moment, so I had to wait around until inspiration struck and I had The Next Big Thing to discuss.

That happened today, and then I realized I've written 140-something blogs over the last year or so. Each time, I've attempted to look at something in a new way, talk about a current event, or just say "this is what God has been telling me lately." Today, I have nothing new to say, and so I want to say something very old. But don't stop me if you've heard this one -- it always bears repeating.

In the beginning, God created the universe. He gave a group of chosen people His law so they could have a relationship with Him and be forgiven of their sins. But those people turned away from God and decided to follow other religions and the desires of their own hearts. Time and time again, God had to call them back, do something unpleasant to get their attention and inspire repentance. Finally, in the fullness of time, God sent His only-begotten Son as a final sacrifice, as the last time He would provide a way to have a relationship with Him. His Son, Jesus, died on a cross, and his death made final atonement for all of our sins. Three days later, he rose again from the grave, and forty days after that, he ascended into heaven. He will come again to take his Church home, but we will all stand in judgment and give an account of our lives. If we accepted Jesus' sacrifice for ourselves, asked him to saved us, were baptized, and confessed him as Lord, we gain eternal life in paradise. If we did not, we gain eternal damnation in a lake of fire.

That's the gospel. Nothing new about it. But if you would like to know more, talk to any Christian -- and you're always invited to worship with us at Russell Springs Christian Church.
